"together...improving the quality of life for individuals with a brain injury and their families."

Brain injury has become a significant medical and societal concern within the last 30 years. With advances in medical technology, many people who would have died are now surviving severe brain injuries. At times the cost is astronomical: financially, socially and emotionally. Brain injury is the No. 1 killer and disabler of persons under the age of 44. Older persons also suffer a significant number of acquired brain injuries from falls and stroke. In 2003-2004 there were 16,811 hospitalizations for traumatic brain injury in Canada (Canadian Institute for Health Information: August 2006. Profile of Head Injury Hospitalizations in 2003.2004).
The actual number of people suffering from Brain Injuries in Canada is unknown but it is estimated there are over 100,000 injuries each year.
New Brunswick's statistical data is currently unknown.  However, it is estimated 3000 New Brunswickers sustain a brain injury each year, affecting their lives and those of their family members.
Current goals of the Brain Injury Association of New Brunswick are:
  •  Lobby the New Brunswick Government to obtain accurate statistical data
  • Lobby the New Brunswick Government to conduct a Needs Assessment for brain injured persons and their families
  • Raise awarness about Brain Injuries
  • Prevention of Brain Injury
  • Support for Brain Injured persons and their families
  • Work with the Brain Injury Association of Canada on their initiatives in partnership
